The Starlight Symphony Orchestra invites you to the opening concert of the 2016-2017 season themed, “All I Need to Know I Learned From the Symphony”. Music that is inspired by various stories and artwork will fascinate imaginations with the first concert entitled, “Stories and Art”. Pieces written for opera and theatre, such as “Poet and Peasant Overture” by Franz von Suppé, and “Aladdin” by Carl Nielsen, boast a lively and energetic sound that is sure to captivate. Perhaps the most dramatic and rich is Rachmaninoff’s “Isle of the Dead”, based on the famous painting by Arnold Böcklin. A moving symphonic poem, the piece portrays the feeling of the painting by using rich orchestral sounds, beautifully orchestrated together, evoking lasting impressions.

Enjoy a jolly, festive experience with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra as it presents a delightful, heart-warming holiday concert themed, “Warm Cookies and Cold Milk.” The entire family is sure to enjoy an interactive evening full of traditional holiday favorites that are sure to spread the holiday cheer. Savor the “Warm Cookie” theme through sing-alongs such as Joy to the World and Silent Night.  “Cold Milk” adds a splash of contemporary, spirited music from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra with added special effects that will truly amaze all! Wizards in Winter, Faith Noel, and A Mad Russian’s Christmas provide a rollicking, dazzling experience you will not want to miss. Beautiful voices from the Hays Honor Choir joined by Malcolm Nelson are sure to enhance the captivating experience.

Take a musical journey through time with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra as it presents its next concert themed, “Wonder.”  Experience the fascinating “wonder” of how music has changed over the years as various composers from distinctive musical time periods are introduced.  Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor showcases the Baroque Age, while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C; Op. 21 highlights the Classical Period.  Perhaps the most well known is the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, with its majestic melodies proving to be an everlasting favorite among audiences.  As the orchestra transitions through time, composers such as Stravinsky and Gershwin bring their unique styles to the Twentieth-Century.  Train and Tower, by Mark Petering, is a modern, captivating compilation of recorded sounds, rhythms, and notes, that is masterfully composed and a treat for all!

Discover the fascinating “Shapes” of music with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra as it presents an outstanding concert in the series themed, “All I Need to Know I Learned From the Symphony.” Enjoy the variations in sound characteristics between large-scale orchestral works, such as Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger, Sant-Saens’ Phaeton, Op. 49, and Suk’s Toward a New Life, and a smaller beautiful, predominately strings piece, Sibelius’ Valse Triste, Op. 44. Exceptional talent shines as the winners of the Young Artists Solo Competition perform their virtuoso pieces with the orchestra. Margaret Seo, performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto, Movement 3, and Jiyee Ahn, performing Wieniawski’s Polonaise Brilliante, masterfully demonstrate how musical shapes can be molded by each individual instrument.

The Starlight Symphony Orchestra proudly presents a captivating, vibrant performance of “Colors,featuring all the colors of the rainbow and more!  The repertoire boasts a diverse variety of music from composers ranging from George Gershwin to Charles Ives, where each piece of music will represent a color, with pieces including “Rhapsody in Blue” and “The Yellow Rose of Texas”.

July 4, 2017 - A Starlight - Spangled Celebration!

Bring your families, friends and neighbors to honor and celebrate America’s Independence Day on the Fourth of July with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra! Fantastic patriotic music performed by the orchestra fills the air starting at 8:00pm, and sets the stage for a brilliant evening of fireworks and fun. Patriotic pieces such as the “Star Spangled Banner,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” and “God Bless America”, are sure to unite. “Salute to Armed Forces” pays tribute to the brave men and women serving our country and brings out our country’s pride. Bring blankets and lawn chairs for a magical and entertaining evening of fun on the lawn of the Hays Performing Arts Center, 979 Kohler’s Crossing, Kyle, TX.  The Starlight Symphony Orchestra concerts are always free and open to the public.
